Bio
Radio was a very early interest of mine. Started with a public radio station licensed to the City of New York, but located at my high school, Brooklyn Tech. (I went there because somehow, I thought I wanted to be an electrical engineer...but soon found out I had no aptitude for math, and said, "Hey, maybe I can talk on the radio.."
So, I was involved in an English class that was done over the air for kids who had various types of health problems that prevented them from attending a regular classroom.. Using the old style "ribbon " type microphones, (like the one you see just under my picture) and related equipment, got me hooked on radio. It was also around the time of the Watergate era, and a lot of people, like me, were getting inspired to get involved in journalism.
From there, I went to the Syracuse University Newhouse School of Public Communications, majored in Broadcast Radio and TV (imagine, they give degrees in this stuff !), and graduated with a B.S. in broadcast journalism. (no jokes please, I've made them all myself)
From there, my first radio job out of college was a little like the old WKRP TV show. This 'city boy' went to Ticonderoga, NY, on the NY/Vermont border, where I became a one-man news department for WIPS radio. That little station was situated near beautiful Lake Champlain, but in the winter I froze my you know what off as I drove to the station every morning (even having to get a ride from the local highway department when the snow got really bad). Just an aside, I was once doing a newscast in the news booth which was not soundproofed, had the window open because no airconditioning, and a cow (we were next to a farmer's field) bellowed so loudly during my newscast it scared the hell out of me and made the morning DJ laugh so loud he almost fell off his chair.
From that incredible one-year stint, it was on to various radio stations around New York and Connecticut, including Monticello, Utica, Albany , and Stamford, CT. I also spent a short time with NBC radio in NYC before they decided to move most of the operation to Virginia.
I came to WHAM in 1994, and except for a couple of years when I went back to one of my old stations to be with my girlfriend and her family, I have been at WHAM ever since as News Director.
I have also taught broadcasting courses at SUNY Geneseo, MCC and Utica College, and I've also been involved for a long time in the New York State Associated Press Broadcasters' Association, as a past-president, and currently member of the board of directors. |

Favorite Websites
Here are just a few of the websites I find useful:
www.refdesk.com -- Just a great hodge-podge of all kinds of reference materials, everything from calculating weights and measures, to phone numbers, dictionaries, and many, many more..
www.nasa.gov -- I really like the quality and variety of photos taken by the Hubble telescope and other telescopes of deep space objects..(makes for great 'wall paper' on your desktop)
www.wunderground.com -- For us weather "geeks" this has a whole lot of interesting weather facts and numbers.
http://www.dealcatcher.com – Good place for some current bargains.
http://www.nascar.com or http://www.jayski.com-- For information on all things NASCAR (yes, I’m a NASCAR fan…no, I don’t have a favorite driver…why do I like watching fast cars go round in circles? I don’t know, it must be related to something in my childhood…maybe I did one too many laps around the crib)
http://finance.yahoo.com – Clear, concise financial website. I use it often when researching the Western NY Business Report.
www.monroecounty.gov -- this is not a commercial for the county. But with its recent re-design, I think it’s one of the easier government websites to access. I particularly like the link to the arrivals and departures at the Rochester airport.

Edward R. Murrow
Thursday 11-23-2006 8:42pm ET
Edward R. MurrowMurrow has always been one of my journalistic heroes. It's not that I think everything he did was wonderful...but a lot of it was. Listen to the link below of one of Murrow's WWII radio broadcasts. Certainly the anchoring style was different then, but still, I think the kind of descriptive writing and concise reporting really depicts some of the finest of what radio news has had to offer. (also, if you haven't seen the movie "Good Night and Good Luck" rent it. I think it's a masterfully done film that gives you a pretty good sense of what Murrow was all about.) Here's part of a broadcast Murrow did in 1940, when he was standing in London's Trafalgar Square, as the air raid sirens went off... Click Here to listen to a portion of that broadcast.
