The Lonsberry Album is a weekly collection of family pictures mixed in with photographs of interesting places and people. The pictures are meant to show the positive, beautiful, hard-working side of life. They are not meant to advertise or advocate anything except an appreciation of people and the good they do. If you would like to recommend yourself or your workplace for inclusion, please e-mail bob@lonsberry.com. All pictures are taken with quality Canon equipment from Rowe Photo, Video and Audio.
LONSBERRY PHOTO TOUR South Dakota
In August I had the chance to drive from east to west across the country, and then, a couple of weeks later, from west to east. This group of pictures is from South Dakota, which turned out to be one of the greatest states. I don't think I'd ever known much about South Dakota and I'd never really had any particular desire to see Mount Rushmore. But my route -- which started in upstate New York and ended in Salt Lake City -- had a northward jag to pick up Yellowstone National Park. That means you have to go through South Dakota. From east to west across that large state I saw beautiful sights and met wonderful people. I mostly followed the Interstate, dropping off along the way to see cool things. And there were plenty of those. Thankfully, South Dakota has wonderful tourism materials that were very useful. I drove through some Sioux Indian areas but, respecting what seemed to be their sensitivities, I didn't take any pictures. I recommend Wall Drug as a must-see tourist stop. Ditto for the Badlands and Rushmore and a place called Custer State Park. Driving through South Dakota left me resolved to bring my entire family back next year for a longer stay and exploration of this great state.

MORE LAME PICTURES!
Here, to waste away time you should be doing something productive, are actual pictures of various Lonsberrys doing truly meaningless things. See here, for the first times, photographs of young Ellie Lonsberry paying her first visit to Nick Tahou's and the Highland Park Diner. See the pater familia posing with an Olympic gold medalist.

NEW YORK CITY
We went to New York City for our summer vacation and saw all sorts of fun things. I finally sorted through the pictures and here they are. Pictured you will see my wife, my 13-year-old daughter Sophie, my 16-year-old daughter Hannah and my year-old son Jack.

YOUNG JACK LONSBERRY ON HALLOWEEN
Jack is about 20 months old and this was his first real Halloween. He went out last year, but he didn't know it, and he didn't get any of the candy. This year, he quickly caught on to the fact that walking up to people's doors and holding up your plastic pumpkin was a very good thing. He went as a fireman and loved his costume. Most of the night he walked down the sidewalk going "woo-ooh-woo-ooh," making his own little siren sound. The pictures were all taken with a small, fully automatic point-and-shoot Canon digital camera from Rowe.

LONSBERRY PHOTO TOUR - MUD BOWL 2006
My daughter Aubrey discovered rugby when she went to Brockport State, a campus of the State University of New York. She went to school expecting to try out for the soccer team, but instead found friends and a new sport in rugby. As her father, I wish she'd pick something a little safer. As her father, I'm incredibly proud of her gusto and courage. These pictures are from a game between Brockport and the Rochester Institute of Technology played at the beautiful RIT campus in Henrietta, New York. It has been a wet year, and there were torrential rains the day before the game, so the field was nothing but slop. But both teams played like troopers and seemed to have a lot of fun. These pictures were taken with a Canon EOS 30D digital single-lens reflex camera from Rowe Photo. The camera was literally taken out of the box and used. The exposure was set to the little running man -- I figured that was for sports -- and the shutter was set on rapid fire. These pictures are an example of the type of sports pictures family photographers can get with modest digital equipment. The pictures were sent to relatives and started popping up on MySpace before the day was done. Click here to view the photos.

LONSBERRY PHOTO TOUR OF GRIZZLYFEST
On those random years when I"m able to shoot a deer, I take it to Grizzly's Custom Cutting near Hunt, on the other side of Nunda, to get it butchered. Each summer, Ivan -- the guy who owns Grizzly's -- has something he calls Grizzlyfest. There are a few vendors -- flea market stuff -- and a couple of bands, and usually a lumberjack demonstration and some tractor pulls. I went down recently with my wife and young son, Jack. You will notice that Jack is growing nicely, but he still has hair like David Letterman. I appreciate the Western New York Lawn Tractor Pulling Association for letting me take their pictures.

LONSBERRY TOUR OF THE STRONG MUSEUM
The Strong Museum has completed an astounding expansion which has instantly become one of Rochester's premiere attractions. Added to the unique museum -- focused on toys and play -- is a butterfly exhibit and a Reading Adventureland. I went with my family recently and was bowled over with the world-class quality of both. These pictures focus mostly on the butterflies, but the museum includes a broad array of activities and exhibits for children that are the equal of any in the country. I don't want to sound like I'm with the Chamber of Commerce, but these additions make this museum a place every family with children should visit. Those planning vacations or visiting from out of town should give serious thought to visiting the museum. I defy anyone not to be stunned by the quality, creativity and pure joy of the Strong Museum.

LONSBERRY PHOTO TOUR OF SUMMER FUN PART II
There is no point to these pictures except a family's happy enjoyment of summer. In some, my children and I go kayaking, in others there are soccer games and young Jack playing in the dirt. They aren't meant to communicate any great message, except that family times are the best times and that modern camera technology can let you save and share precious memories. The purpose of these pictures isn't to make you think about my family, but to help you realize what you can do with your own family.

LONSBERRY PHOTO TOUR OF UTAH
For the last six years, I have hosted the morning program on radio station KNRS in Salt Lake City. It has been one of the most enjoyable and fulfilling parts of my working life. It is a great town, a great state, a great station and great people. On a recent trip, I took my camera and got pictures of some of my co-workers, the general area and Temple Square, the third biggest tourist attraction in the West – after Yellowstone and the Grand Canyon.

LONSBERRY PHOTO TOUR OF THE 1180 WHAM STAFF
People on the radio never look like how they sound. I’m not sure what that means, but everybody knows it’s true. So here are pictures. Pictures of many of the people who you hear on WHAM. Working with them is a delight. There is not a single person I can think of on the WHAM staff who is not exactly the same in person that they appear to be on the radio. Many of them were people I admired and listened to before I came to the radio station, and my years of working with them since has only increased my respect and appreciation for them. Most workplaces have slugs; ours isn’t one of them. Take a look-see at some of the people who work at WHAM.

LONSBERRY TOUR OF THE MONROE AVENUE SHOE REPAIR SHOP
Al Riolo has run a shoe repairshop on Monroe Avenue for years, bringing an Old World work ethic to a dying trade. He apprenticed to a shoemaker in Sicily when he was 6 years old and came to the United States as a teen-ager after the war. For years he was an expert fabric cutter in Rochester's various suit manufacturers. In middle age he returned to shoemaking and repair and now, nearing 80, he still works every day. Al is an example of the strength Italian immigrants brought to Rochester and America. To read more about Al - click here.

LONSBERRY TOUR OF MT. MORRIS SALT MINE
The American Rock Salt mine near Mount Morris supplies most of the rock salt used in the Northeast. The mineral makes roads safe for winter travel, saving countless lives and keeping important avenues of transportation open. Crews work around the clock to mine and maintain the facility and send off a 70-car freight train full of salt every day. The new mine replaces one in Retsof which produced for more than a hundred years before collapsing due to an engineering error introduced by its foreign owners. The new American Rock Salt mine was put together by local businessmen and other investors and brought back many of the longtime miners who had worked in Retsof. It is literally the continuation of a five-generation tradition of salt mining in Livingston County.

LONSBERRY PHOTO TOUR OF MEXICO
My son, Lee, has spent the last two years in southern Mexico as a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, informally known as the Mormon Church. At the end of his time of service, his mom and I went down to pick him up and spent a week visiting the places and people he had come to know and love. These are pictures from that trip. All were taken with a Canon PowerShot SD550 Digital Elph from Rowe Photo, Video and Audio in Rochester, New York.
