Gates Police Chief Retiring

Gates Police Chief James Van Brederode is retiring at the end of the week.

He's been chief for more than 8 years and has been in law enforcement for 37 years.

He says in a statement it was "an honor and privilege to serve the Town." And he says he looks forward to continuing to be an active voice and advocate for the victims of violent crime.

There is speculation he will be a candidate for the state Senate.

Lieutenant Robert Long will become acting chief and is expected to be appointed chief at next month's town board meeting.
