Police Warn of Increasing Vehicle Thefts Across Monroe County

The Monroe County Association of Chiefs of Police is warning of a trend of stolen vehicles countywide. Gates Police Chief James VanBrederode says since July they've noticed numerous cars and trucks stolen during the night, often by groups of teenagers who enter unlocked vehicles and steal the car.

Also happening too frequently, victims being forced out of their cars by physical violence or threat of a weapon in carjackings. And finally, residential homes being entered, often during the night, by thieves who find the car keys in the kitchen and take the car.

These thefts continue despite numerous arrests. Chief VanBrederode says if confronted with a weapon, give up the car. It can be replaced, but you can't. He says outside lights should be left on, keep cars and doors and windows locked, and don't leave the keys in your car.
