Former Police Chief La'Ron Singletary to Sue the City Over His Firing

UPDATE: Former Rochester Police Chief La'Ron Singletary claims in his lawsuit that Mayor Lovely Warren lied when she told reporters in September that he didn't tell her that officers had restrained Daniel Prude before he died in March.

And Singletary says Warren asked him to lie on her behalf to the City Council.

When he refused, he says that created a hostile work environment and led to his decision to retire.

The mayor fired him before he could do so. His suit claims defamation and retaliation.

In a statement, City Hall calls the suit "frivolous" and says the administration is fully complying with the City Council review.

Former Police Chief La'Ron Singletary has filed notice he plans to sue the City over his firing.

His firing in September came after the public learned of the death in March of Daniel Prude days after Prude was restrained by officers and lost consciousness.

Mayor Warren said she wasn't adequately informed about Prude's death. Singletary stated he sent her a text message and did not get a reply.

Warren told the Office of Public Integrity she did not recall receiving the text message. Singletary also stated he mentioned it to the mayor days later.
