Cashless Thruway Tolls Imminent

Toll collectors on the New York State Thruway reportedly will be laid off after this weekend.

The USA Today's New York State Team reports the toll plaza workers were told that Sunday will be their last day of work, and their managers will finish work Wednesday.

The Thruway is switching to cashless tolls. A move that is expected to take place overnight Friday.

Overhead cameras and sensors will track the vehicles that use the Thruway. Tolls will automatically deducted from E-ZPass accounts. Vehicle owners without an account will get a bill in the mail.

Governor Andrew Cuomo says this will speed up travel on the Thruway by as much as 25 percent.

Some of the displaced workers will be eligible for retirement.
