The state Board of Regents has named Shannon Tahoe as the temporary state education commissioner.
Tahoe has worked in several positions within the education department since 2006.
In a statement, the board said Tahoe has extensive experience and leadership that will serve the department well.
The education department has been without a permanent commissioner since MaryEllen Elia resigned earlier this year.
