The state reportedly is negotiating with federal officials in hopes of keeping up some of the more than 500 illegal I Love NY highway signs.
The Federal Highway Administration is threatening to impose a $14 million penalty if the signs aren't down by the end of this month. The regulators say the signs are a distraction for drivers.
The USA TODAY Network's Albany bureau reports the Cuomo administration is offering to take down 400 signs and leave up 122. A sticking point is whether an italic font on one word on the remaining signs is also a distraction.
